Moving again

10/10- We get up on Monday at the crack of dawn, well at least we let the dew dry up a little. We had to leave early to get over the low spot at Sandy Point. Also I was pretty nervous about getting out of the slip. With a full keel our boat is a crap shoot backing up and we do not have a lot of experience with slips. Anyway it all goes well and it looks like we know what we are doing.

We head off down the Pawkatuc River winding our way through and make it over the bar. Now we are in Fishers Island Sound and at first we had the tide with us and the wind was light but then the tide turned. I had been hoping we would be further along but by the time we hit New London we were pounding into some pretty big waves. The dolphin on my bow sprit got dunked te and time again. We were creeping along at 1-2 knots. It was not pleasant seeing water cascading down the cabin top. It's a good thing we only had 20 miles to go today.

Eventually we got further down the sound and the current lessened and we were able to move. We pulled into Old Saybrook in the harbor of refuge. Here because the Army Corps of Engineers dredged out this mooring field you can pick up any mooring not being used. If the owner comes back you have to move but there are designated moorings that no one uses.

It was a nice quiet night but chilly. It was one of the first real cold nights.

10/11- Today we did get up before dawn and we saw a gorgeous sunrise as we motored down the Connecticut River to the sound. We had a long way to go today. The trouble with this time of year is the days keep getting shorter. Once we got out in the sound we put on the autopilot and plugged in the course and sat back and watched water go by. It was a beautiful day with no wind and even though we were still bucking the current it was much less this far down the sound. We pulled into Port Jefferson in no time. Quite the difference from yesterday. Today we did 42 miles in 7 hours while yesterday we did 20 miles in 7 1/2 hours.

10/12- We headed out early again but not quite so early. It was the same thing, the autopilot did all the steering while we sat back and watched. We arrived in Port Washington around 2 and picked up a mooring. The first night here is free but you have to pay for the launch. After this you pay $35 but the launch is free. We took the free mooring and neglected to take the launch.

From here we can stage for the run through NYC. The run down the East River has to be timed because the currents are so strong. Also there is a storm coming and we have to decide where we will stay when that hits. Stay tuned...
