Jekyll Island
12/8- We were lazy this morning and didn’t leave until 10:00. This was because we didn’t want to get there too early and Jekyll was only 10 miles away. It was really peaceful at the anchorage as there was no wind at all. We motored our way through a couple of inlets and into Jekyll Creek. This is another in a continuing series of very shallow spots. In order to get to the marina at slack tide we had go through this 3 mile stretch at close to low tide. We crawled our way down the creek churning up the mud on the bottom. There were spots where we had to have pushed through the mud. The depth sounder was showing 4.3 feet and we draw 5.
Eventually we pull up to the dock here at Jekyll Island marina and tied up. They let us take a courtesy golf cart out on a tour of the island. This island is filled with these massive old live oaks just dripping with Spanish moss. Some of it is really surreal. There are several old mansions leftover from the days of the industrial giants. They all got together and decided that in order to be social all of the “cottages” that were built here would not have kitchens. This was so they would all have to get together and eat at one location.
We stopped at a beach called Driftwood beach. Here there are the skeletal remains of piles of live oaks their roots silhouetted against the sky. We just walked down the beach amidst all these old giants. It was here too we saw our first alligator. It was about a 5 footer. The girl in the office promised us she would tell us where there would be many alligators tomorrow. We also saw trees full of ibises. These are big white birds with a long curved beak.
We got the golf cart back just in time as the charge in the batteries was about out. Tomorrow we hope to hop on some bicycles and tour some more of the island.
