Velcro
1/12- Melbourne to Vero Beach
It took a while to get the anchor up this morning as it was covered in mud and shells. We had spun around in the night and the chain just dragged through the mud. It took nearly a half hour to get it all cleaned up.
The first part of the trip was the same. The Indian River is big and wide and very shallow. The wind was right on our nose and it kept threatening to rain. Further down it got a little more interesting as there were little islands that we went around. Also there was fog. It was the first time I had turned on the radar since Maine. It didn’t last long and soon we were in a channel of mangroves and mansions. One side of the channel was mangroves and the other monster mansions.
We finally turned the corner into Vero Beach and pulled up to the fuel dock. You have to pay first here and they tell you where to pick up your mooring. We would be rafting up to another boat. Again we were placed in the outer reaches of the mooring field. The boat we were to raft up to was a Little Harbor 44. It took us a while to get everything sorted because of course the wind had to blow the hardest all day right then but eventually we got tied to the other boat and to the mooring. They were doubling and even tripling boats on the moorings.
After we got settled went to shore to check it out and wouldn’t you know it just as we were heading back it started to pour. We were drenched and the boat had been open so we were all wet. Fortunately it was very warm and even felt good to be wet. The weather is finally warming up a bit.
Tomorrow we check out all the things to do around here. One guy wants to play pickleball and there is a free Pink Floyd cover band concert across the street. I guess we will find out why they call this place Velcro Beach.
