Noise

 2/7- Jensen Beach

Well the wind had let up a little today and we were able to get into town for Happy Hour. We met up with a bunch of folks from boats in the anchorage. Mike and Carla and their passengers Mike and Michelle and Lee and Wendy and also in the mix were Mike and Kris from Galileo. We sure gave the waiter a run for his money. Everyone is heading off in different directions so it may be some time until we see any of these folks again. I guess that is what this life style is all about.

The wind has piped back up again which brings me to an old topic, noise. There is a whole cacophony of noise on the boat. As the boat rocks it flexes and that causes all these creaks and snaps from the cabinetry. The waves are slapping against the hull and the rigging is humming away. And I still haven’t been able to stop that halyard from slapping on the mast. Then there are the squeaks when the mooring lines tighten up and rub against the chafe gear. Of course there always seems to be something rolling around on deck. Then we have the fish grunting away and the shrimp chomping on the growth on the boat.  If that wasn’t enough noise we also have to include the ever present sirens. I don’t think we have gone more than 12 hours in a stretch without hearing sirens. Of course we can’t forget the rumbling roar of the unmuffled motorcycle. I don’t mean to pick on motorcycles as there are plenty of cars with loud mufflers. They all seem to have to accelerate at top rpm to get up the ramp to the bridge. Maybe they need to because it’s  steepest hill around. I almost forgot the trains. The trains run right near shore and have to blow their horns at any crossing. It’s no wonder Alayne wears ear plugs.

Of course through all this noise I can still pick out that one noise that doesn’t belong. A pan left slightly ajar and rocking back and forth will drive me nuts. I can hear water sloshing in a water bottle left on the counter. I even can hear the flag on the spreaders flapping. The dinghy trailing off the stern has a certain sound. All must be well before I can fall off to sleep. Speaking of which..,,
