4/7- Fernandino Beach to Cumberland Island

We had a short 5 mile run today to get to Cumberland Island. We had passed on this place on the way down because we had spent 3 or 4 days at Jekyll Island which is just up the river a bit. At the time it seemed like one couldn’t be much different from the other. Wrong! Jekyll has all the big live oaks but it is very developed. It’s kind of like being in a theme park. It was fun and interesting but Cumberland is a much more natural place.

We anchored just off the Sea Camp dock and dinghied in where we met a couple who pointed us in the right direction. The trails wind through some gorgeous and very old live oaks which were dripping with the Spanish moss. We walked down to the ruins of the Carnegie mansion. The descriptions of what this place must have looked like were amazing. Only 200 years later and the place lies in ruins. It was easy to imagine as you stood next to the rubble of one of the houses what it must have been like.

We did see plenty of wild horses while we were there. They art just grazing out on what used to be the lawn. From there we headed through the dunes which was impressive. I have never been in a place like that before. You wound through these mounds of dunes which had sparse vegetation growing on them. Then you come out onto the beach.

It was impressive today because it was low tide and an extra low tide due to the new moon. There was a lot of beach because the tides here are around 7 feet. There was at least 150 yards of firm packed sand for a beach. The sand here is also very white and very fine. It gets in everywhere. We found a bunch more sharks teeth before heading back to the boat for a well earned nap and happy hour. It was another beautiful day and we used up as much as we could.
