 5/12- St Michaels

We saw the fleet of Cape Dories off this morning. It was a good time talking shop and I’m sure we will meet some of these folks again. It was an off and on day weatherwise. When I got up and poked my head out the sun was shining but by the time I pulled back the hatch cover it started to rain. Then the sun would come back out. Etc etc …

We did use the rain to pull out the anchor chain and line and get it cleaned and rinsed off. We are starting to put together a plan for when we get hauled out. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself as I don’t know how the marina will handle it. It will be interesting as we are going out as most everyone else is going in. Most of the people we met this weekend had just launched their boats and some had yet to put their sails on.

I had spent some time wandering around the museum this weekend and learning some of the history and lore of this area. I learned a lot about oystering and crabbing. I feel the glorification of the waterman lifestyle is sadly misplaced. Yes these guys worked hard and had a rough life but they also would have taken the last oyster out of the bay without batting an eye. They gave very little thought to what they were doing to the oyster beds in the drive to make more money.

We went over to Foxy’s for happy hour and met up with Bob and Samar who we had cruised with for quite a while. It was one more in a series of goodbye celebrations. It also included Tuxedo the wonder dog who braved much to sail on a boat for 6 months. From seasickness to learning how to pee on a mat he was a trooper.

The waves are slapping at the hull once again signaling that wind and tide has shifted once more.  The tide this morning was 2 feet above normal. This is caused by all the east wind blowing the water up the bay. The docks here are all fixed meaning they don’t float. The water this morning was very close to covering the dock we are tied to and a lot of the museum grounds were flooded. I don’t think the south wind tomorrow will help the situation but at least we should have no worries about low water.
