Fog

 6/18- Cutty Hunk MA

This morning was a continuation of yesterday’s weather.  When I looked out I could not see the shore and I could only barely pick out the boats next to me. Time to go back to bed. Except we had a rather long way to go today so we got fired up and thought about heading out. Trouble was I couldn’t see the entrance. Fortunately with our chart plotter and radar we didn’t need to see it.

Once we cleared the last buoy we put up the main sail. As there was very little wind this was more to make ourselves visible than anything else. Once we rounded the bar on the north end of the island we shut down the motor and raised the sails. This got us exactly nowhere. The booms were slatting back and forth and we were doing 1.5 knots. I had hoped it might fill in a bit but nothing doing and we woke Mr Perkins back up.

About an hour later we caught up and passed our friends from Block and they were sailing fine. So again I tried to put the sails up. We made it about twenty minutes before the no wind and big waves made us Mr Perkins fans again.

The fog had not let up all day as we sailed ( motored) in our own little world. We had about a 1/4 mile of visibility. There were several times we would see radar targets along side us but we never did see the boat. We did see several large freighters appear out of the fog. They would call us on the radio to make sure we didn’t do anything moronic.

The fog lifted for about ten minutes when we got to Cutty Hunk and then the curtain dropped again. We had trouble finding the mooring balls. If a boat hadn’t been on one I’m not sure we would have. Since then we have not been able to see the island at all. This is the first night on this trip that I cannot see and shore lights. They may be there but the fog is so thick that the light is gobbled up. It would be nice tomorrow if we could see a little more than the grey blanket we saw today.
