Spring has sprung

 6/25- Rockland ME

   Well it’s been a while since I checked in here and so I thought I would update what’s been happening. We got to Rockland around mid June and set to work getting Nutmeg ready for another campaign. We didn’t have a whole lot to do so we basically cleaned her up and enjoyed yard life for a while. We checked in with old friends and new and saw what was new in Rockland. 

   The fun began when we were launched. The launching went well and we got all the sails on just in time for a big storm to hit. We sat all the next day in the wind and rain being tossed about like being in a washing machine. It was one way to get your sea legs. There were some 4 foot rollers cruising through the harbor that made cooking dinner a bit more exciting than normal. 

   After things calmed down a bit we headed out for a sail up to Holbrook Island. It was a nice reach in about 10-15 knots of west to northwest wind. That is until we ran into the squall line. The wind increased dramatically and laid the boat over on its side which would have been fine except the dinghy flipped over. It was now dragging the boat sideways and we heeled over even more. I was now unable to steer and the sails were flogging all over the place. As is the case we these kinds of storms it was over in 20 minutes but the damage had been done. We now had to tame all the sails which had shredded to some degree. The hard part turned out to be righting the dinghy. Once I broke the suction and got it upright things went much smoother. The jib sail looked to be in tatters though. 

   After tying up to a mooring in Tod Codd Cove we decided to wait until the wind died down to an acceptable level to assess the damage. It turned out that it was mostly the sun cover on the sail that had been torn off and the sail was for the most part ok. Upon returning to Rockland we borrowed a friends sewing machine and stitched it all back together almost as good as new(!). 

   We are back in Rockland waiting out another round of inclement weather and to resupply.

 5/20- Boby Owl Cove, Broad Creek, Choptank River    We finally got to go sailing today. We put up the main sail and cruised out of the Wye River where I ran out the stay sail. When we made the turn to head for the Eastern Bay the wind was on the nose. We short tacked a few times before putting the motor back on to bump us around the point. Once there all three sails were up and we romped down the bay until the wind collapsed.      We had a choice here, we could continue sailing slowly and go outside of Poplar Island or turn the motor on and take the short way. We chose the motor as the wind was dying. Poplar Island is being extended with spoils from dredging operations. This inside track is a bit winding but near the southern end it gets very shallow. Floating

 9/8- Rockland ME    The forecast called for the wind to be decent between 7 and 9 this morning. We got up early to try and at least get the sails dried out. It turns out those forecasters lied. The wind was 10 knots out of the west that lasted from 7 until noon. Those bastards made me sail all the way from Holbrook on a beam reach sometimes getting up to 6.5 knots. The nerve of these people!!     Of course by noon we were not in Rockland but were about 5 miles away. We were at this point drifting faster than we were sailing. The decision was whether to continue to wait for the wind which was coming eventually from the south or to give Mr Perkins a nice workout. We figured Mr P deserved to end the season on a high note so we fired him up and burned off some carbon.     There was a huge cruise ship in the harbor today which was constantly ferrying people back and forth into town. Ditto

 7/27- Rockland ME   Today was mostly a carbon copy of yesterday. I got up early and went over to work with the lobster fest folks. I did a lot of odd little jobs today as I think they were having trouble thinking of stuff for me to do. It’s an interesting group of people as they are obviously mostly locals. Many of them have volunteered at this festival for years, some as many as 30 years. They all know each other and it’s like a big family reunion.     Now that I’ve had an inside look it is tough to realize that festivals like this have seen their glory days. Tradition is probably the biggest thing keeping it going. They say it used to be that nobody in the state would schedule anything for this weekend but now there are many other activities to choose from. Portland has a big outdoor concert this weekend and another town has scheduled their county fair.      Still it will be plenty crowded which means we won’t be anywhere near here. Our annual ...
