Uh oh
8/2- Rockland ME
When we last left you we were waiting out some bad weather which never really arrived. The morning after dawned bright and sunny but with no wind in the forecast. On leaving the cove we discovered a slight northern breeze which led to one thought — spinaker. For the first time in 2 years we said let’s go. It took me a while to figure everything out and get all the lines on the right sides but then with a whopp the sail filled and away we went.
We were cruising along at 4-5 knots until we came to Cape Rosier where the wind decided to take a break. It never really died though and we managed to keep the sail full and drawing. We were moving along at the stunning speed of 1-2 knots. I was glad just to be moving. The breeze eventually filled and and we strolled down Penobscot bay at a leisurely pace with just the spinaker flying. We now had to gibe the sail which is always a challenge with a spinaker. It went amazingly smoothly and we were now dancing along at 5-6 knots ironing out some of the wrinkles in the sail. We maneuvered around several small islands and half hidden rocks to emerge in East Pen Bay.
It was a 4 hour and 20 mile spinaker run! It was worth carrying the sail around for 2 years to get such a nice sail out of it. We anchored in what I call Mullen Bay. It has no name on the chart but we like it here as it is a big wide open and I crowded bay. There is a nice beach along with a park with nice walking trails. We happened upon a nice couple from Vermont and a young woman who worked with our daughter Kalyn. It was a nice peaceful night.
The next morning suffered the same affliction as the other day- no wind. It stayed pretty much flat calm until noon when we noticed some ripples in the water. We got the sails up and managed to make it around the corner and along the north shore of the island before the wind vanished. Mr Perkins was ready and he bumped us along for about a half hour until we saw wind again. Now though it was on the nose. We sailed close hauled with only one tack gliding past the breakwater lighthouse where we posed for several home videos.
There is another weather system heading our way tomorrow which sounds nasty. Big wind and rain so we will sit tight on our mooring and let this baby motor on by.
