It is done

 9/24- Rockland ME

  This season has come to a close as Ms Nutmeg was hauled out and is now sitting comfortably on shore. Normally this is a very anxious time for me as backing into a long narrow slipway with a full keel boat is not my idea of a good time. Luckily the marina purchased a new travel lift that is higher than the old one and we questioned whether we could fit going in forwards. In the end we decided to just remove the head stay and go in forward. It worked like a charm and when our name was called we just motored right in and she was scooped up. 

    There is a big storm brewing out in the Atlantic and many people are now trying to get their boats on land. We had picked this date several weeks ago so it was pretty serendipitous. We were planning to do a bunch of work but with the forecast for wind and rain all weekend we will probably just head home. 

   We had some very good sails this summer as we added to out list of places we hadn’t been to. We had a 4 hour spinnaker run as well as a run from Northwest Harbor to Bucks Harbor all with an east wind. Another great sail was from Swann’s Island to Bucks Harbor down the Eggemoggin with the wind constantly shifting until we sailed right into the harbor. 

    We also had our share of big wind being knocked down twice and experiencing a micro burst at anchor. Nutmeg performed admirably as she kept us safe even as we tried to screw it up. 

    We sailed 800 nautical miles this summer while racking up 63 hours for Mr Perkins. We used 36 gallons of diesel fuel and spent $640 on moorings. We dined out numerous times  for $963 while spending $1800 on groceries. 

   We are always sad to see the season end and will miss all our Maine friends but at the same time we are excited to get home for a bit and then head out in the RV. Stay tuned…

Swans

 8/11- Swans Island ME   The wind was up early this morning but it didn’t get too far up. We waited around until 9:30 or so and thought we detected a wisp of a breeze. It was of course directly behind us which is a poor point of sail for us. After dodging a few bunkers we finally got to run the head sail out and ran wing on wing for a bit. Once we turned the corner we ran down Jericho Bay quite nicely. By the time we got near the harbor entrance the wind was steadily decreasing but we managed to sail right into the harbor.     It’s been quite a while since we have been in here so we picked up a mooring with a soda bottle for paying. We then hustled over and walked up to an old quarry where we went for a swim. What a Ride

 8/14- Rockland ME    The day dawned bright and early this morning. With the sun shining and the wind up we shoved off. The wind was northwest so we struggled a bit at first as it was directly behind us. It was gusty enough to get us around the corner without having to jibe. Once around the corner though the wind turned west and piped right up. We put a reef in around Lincolnville which settled the ride down a bit. We were now averaging 7 to 7.5 knots just flying down the bay. In the end over the 25 mile stretch we averaged 6.5 knots hitting 8.5 once. Wow , what a ride!!     We went to Camden to have a final dinner with all the participants of the cruise. It was a good time and we all got together to brag about our exploits on the trip down. It was another good cruise.

Wind

 9/10- Cradle Cove, Isleboro ME   We took off early this morning to catch a little of the tide as we ran across the bay in fine form. It was a nice close reach all the way into Searsport harbor where we tacked. We then headed down the long narrow part of West Penobscot bay. The wind, by the forecasts that I saw was supposed to turn west at this point. Instead the wind continued its SW run ever increasing as the day went on. We slowly started reducing sail in order to keep the boat on her feet. The wind was undecided in what it wanted to do. One minute it was a nice mellow breeze and the next it came roaring down out of the mountains to try to topple our boat. We ever so patiently worked our way down the west coast of Isleboro close hauled until we got to Warren Island where the wind and waves and ferries all combined to make the entrance one to not forget.      We anchored just off the mooring field for Dark Harbor boat yard.
