Sad news
2/26- Vero Beach
We got some sad news today as my brother in law passed away. His name was Steve Phelps and he was an amazing person. Steve was from Australia and spent time in Alaska where he was a big outdoor sportsman. That is until a body surfing accident left him a quadrapedic. Even after his accident he lived a full life refusing to pity himself. He fished often and well and even hunted zooming around in his motorized wheelchair. He was one of the most amazing boat drivers I have ever seen. His zeal for life was so infectious. The average life expectancy of someone with his level of injury is 10 years after the injury. Steve just through force of will made it almost 30 years. We had many good times together and I am sad that I will not get the chance to party with him again. Fish on Steve!!
Other than that it was another full day of doing Vero things. We played pickleball in the morning and then went to see the new Bob Marley movie at the cheap theater. We were walking back to the bus stop after the movie and a car pulls up and asks if we are going back to the marina. Sure enough another boater recognized us as boaters and gave us a ride. One of the best things about this lifestyle is it is a relatively small community and people help other people. I am constantly awed at the generosity and giving spirit of the boating community.
