Long days
4/23- Mile Hammock to Cedar Creek (Oriental)
It was another early morning as we had a long way to go and we wanted to catch the 8am bridge opening. The Onslow Bridge used to open on the hour and half hour but now they have reduced it to just on the hour. Thankfully the bridge was only 3 miles from the anchorage. It seems we were not alone in thinking this. As we were waiting for the bridge another 4 boats pulled up, all from our anchorage. It’s interesting to have 5 boats milling around in a narrow area. Especially as you cannot just stop and park a boat. It’s a good thing we went through when we did as they moved a crane barge into the main channel right after we got through. That left only 30 feet of space for the next crew through. Hopefully there will be no catamarans.
I don’t really understand what happened with the tide today. With all the inlets we were passing I thought we’d be going fast then slow etc. But the tide gods were with us(mostly). We flew at around 6 knots most of the way until we got to Moorhead City and Beaufort( bowfort). There we picked up even more speed until we turned the corner to Core Creek and Addams Creek. It was like slamming on the brakes. We crawled the rest of the way finally getting here around 5:00. Whew!!
Cedar Creek is an inlet off the ICW and is relatively shallow being only 7 feet deep mostly. It is a nice quiet place and surrounded by some tall pine trees.
I enjoyed the color of the water today. As you find around most inlets the water is a beautiful emerald green. As we had a bunch of inlets and a couple of large inlets most of the water we went through today was this color. In the sun and with a clear blue sky it was a picturesque day.
