Gripes

 5/24- Cambridge MD

  The municipal marina here is a very nicely run marina. The staff really care about you and the place is clean and well maintained. That being said I have a few gripes. There have always been lights on docks which I’m sure are for safety but the one that is directly over our cockpit is like a miniature sun. I’m pretty sure the solar panel is producing electricity all night long. I swear you could get a tan from this light. 

    The other thing about this place is how far the bathroom is. It has to be a half mile walk to get to the shower building. I mean it is a great way to get your steps in but after a weekend of having to walk a half mile every time you leave the boat it gets old. 

    I don’t mean to a whiner as I really like this place and think they do a great job. 

   We walked into town this morning and just meandered through the downtown. There are some beautiful old buildings just off the docks. There are also some less beautiful but old buildings as you get off the main streets. Still it was a nice day and we enjoyed our stroll. 

    In the afternoon we got both our friends together and went to a nearby winery. They had a band playing and there was lots of good food. It was a fine day.

The adventure begins

 I am sitting here on my couch in Vermont trying to remember all the stuff I will need to do to get ready for this trip. We have about a week to go and I keep wandering around the house and seeing stuff I think might be handy. If I keep this up too long the boat will not float on her water line anymore. Leaks

 5/14/2025- Rock Hall MD   Well it poured last night. It was the kind of rain that made me glad I was on a boat. It was a good way to test for leaks. Boats are always springing leaks usually right where you least want them.     Boat leaks are also notoriously hard to track down. I have a porthole that leaks and despite having sealed the outside with a whole tube of caulking it still leaks. Water will come from pretty far away to spill out in the worst places. It gets under the headliner and travels down the length of the boat. I swear it leaches uphill even. I have even gone so far as to dye the water to see if I could figure out where it was coming from.     Well this porthole of mine that has the notorious leak was in perfect form this morning. As the rain crashed down outside the leak magnified and dropped a deluge right on my face. It was almost like taking a quick morning shower. I decided to just get up when it filled my mouth up with water....

C&D

 6/2- Reedy Island, Delaware River DE    It was a beautiful day for a sail, cough, I mean motor. The sky was blue and cloudless as we followed the ebb tide down the Sassafras. The wind did pick up as we entered the bay but so did the ebb which slowed us right down. We motored on heading up the Elk River into the C&D canal. Here we picked up the flood current and went flying. This boat doesn’t go much faster than it did today. We were doing 8.5 knots over the ground and we chewed through the canal in a couple of hours.      When we hit the Delaware we ran smack into the flood tide so while I would have liked to keep going it didn’t make sense. We pulled in to Reedy Island channel and dropped anchor. This channel is swept by 2-3 knots currents changing direction every 6 hours or so. The entrance is tricky because it is narrow and it is guarded by long dikes which can’t be seen at high water. We came in at low water so we could see the hole in the dike it’...
